What a beautiful nod from the Universe that your team member found that book, found you there, and gifted you (and us) a message from your past self! Also, those lines from Natalie and relating it back growing up with an alcoholic parent, just...another moment of realizing it’s not just me. Thank you, Laura.

Gabrielle Zevin's book was a stunning read. They just announced the same director who did Coda is going to be directing the film adaptation with Zevin producing -- can't wait for the release! ✨

OH MY GOD.

Right?! Coda got best picture, *imagine* what they’ll do with Zevin’s magic. It’ll be an award winner for sure!

This is the BEST news! I loved that book and lots of friends who did as well. And Coda? That was beautiful.

I hadn’t watched that episode of the The Bear, do I initially skipped over that part of your article until I watched. She summed up exactly how I’ve felt all of my life. Especially the one about feeling like I am always in trouble.

I love that excerpt and thinking about the sunrise and ocean waves as proof to continue to show up again and again - it's beautiful.

And The Bear - so good. I couldn't stop watching it until I finished the latest season. I hid my phone under the covers while my children slept next to me with my ear buds on until too late in the night.

I love that you're going slow as you need, too. It makes your posts extra special when they come out.

THE BEAR! Oh my god The Bear- I don’t know why it never sank in until a couple weeks ago that I needed to be watching this until I was with one of my sober besties and she couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen it and now I can’t get enough.

And Jake Gyllenhaal is my number one hall pass in marriage and so I will for sure be watching that.

Also yall- this podcast I am listening to on Dax is 🔥. It’s with this guy Phil Elwood on his new book, “All the Worst Humans” and his time in DC as a guy doing PR for all this crazy stuff and it is WIIIILLLLLDDD! It’s so good.

Yes, The Bear is definitely squarely in your wheelhouse. I will check out the Dax episode!

I have never watched The Bear, but reading the LA times review of the series, woof! I am Carmy, in the fridge, hi’ it’s me! So two years of therapy and this reviewer sees my patterns so clearly, I had to screen shot the text and read it again and again. Regards, ACA traveller and future watcher of The Bear series🤯

So many of us know Carmy's path too well.

As for The Bear … I actually LOVED episode 1 (watched it twice)

It was the epitome of “show not tell” which is so hard as a television show. We learned so much about Carmy, Mickey’s death, Marcus’ grief, etc without ANY dialogue. Genius - using images instead of dialogue.

And the fact they used the song Nine Inch Nails’ “Together” on a loop through the whole show was profound (probably why you thought you weee on a tamarack)l. Their songs are always so intentional so I love that it is called Together.

This isn’t about a restaurant, this is about a community of people who have felt alone, pain and endured trauma (loss, substance abuse, divorce, etc) in their life and they NEED each other. Best show - and I think best Season out there!

I'm sure so many people loved that episode! And I can see why it was artful. But it made me and the person watching it feel nutty! It is such an incredible show overall.

When I finished All Fours by Miranda July I wanted to frame it above my bed. It's a goddamned manifesto.

Expand full comment

Ok, I will read it! I hope you leave that as a review in all the places!

Yes to Miranda July's all fours. And compassionate commiseration to the body saying, "nice try babe, but real change is happening now. It's time to learn it all again." Hugs Laura.

OK OK. I'm going to read it. Also: hi!

Hi Laura. I’m listening to All Fours now and enjoying it. Just an FYI… perimenopause was THE hardest time of my life! I couldn’t concentrate to read a book to save my life. It’s gets better, but man was it rough.

Thanks for the recommendations. I trust your judgement so it helps me fill up my queue-I had never seen your Fav Fiction list before so I’m excited!

Have you read Martyr! yet? I just finished it and it kinda took my breath away. There’s some recovery, some poetry so I thought of you. Highly recommend it.

I was bracing myself for her to do something horrendous, too. Jamie Lee Curtis is a magician.
