“Let Them” I mean duh… why is this so revelatory??? It’s like the parenting book “Blessing of the Skinned Knee” about letting your kids learn a bit from life. Saw the author speak when my kids were young— all my friends were raving… again I was like well Yeah a DUH?!?! But it really opened my eyes to how there are actual geographic differences in child rearing. It saved me a lot of self doubt as a midwestern gal mothering on the east coast. Oooh an Landman say no more. How Billy Bob Thornton can come off as sexy I not sure but he does!

I have no doubt people have found value in her work; it's the grifter vibes that turns me off so hard. Yes to BBT! I don't know how either but it worked lol.

i heard her interview on We Can Do Hard Things.. and couldn't finish it. Something about her demeanor just made me so uneasy and I didn't like her. Somehow I found her so.... aggressive. Now I learn all this, and I am reminded to trust my instinct instead of writing it off as "judgy", as I was doing.

Same! She didn’t let anyone else talk and it seemed so canned.

The Mel Robbins thing is really bothering me. Like, infiltrates-my-brain-at-random-times level bothering me. I was never into her to begin with, but this really moves her from annoying to harmful. I'm pissed and I wish I could do something more (than sharing the story as far and wide as my network will allow). Glad to see you writing about it. I hope the pressure increases.

The scarcity mindset of Mel not attributing the concept to the original poet is disheartening to say the least. What troubles me most though, is seeing a self-proclaimed growth mindset guru operating from such a limited perspective. Thank you for shining a light on this and encouraging all of us to do better and be better.

Oh! And if you enjoy Nora Ephron (and documentaries) I highly recommend "Everything Is Copy" on HBO Max... a beautiful portrait of her life told by those closest to her (and directed/produced by her son).

Did you know that Heartburn was inspired by Nora’s divorce from Carl Bernstein — one of the two journalists that broke the Watergate scandal at the Washington Post?!

This sent me down a very eccentric reading path last year. “All the President’s Men” was detailed and lengthy, albeit educational and the autobiography of Katharine Graham (Owner/publisher of WaPo during Watergate and many years before and after) was historically fascinating.

Laura,

You are a calm and steady voice in this 💩 storm of a world we find ourselves in. I personally, am so happy to have this tiny little haven and community to go to when the buggers are getting to me. So thank you, thank you all! xx

I still quote from Heartburn, and I read it 35 years ago. The characterization of the husband and his little passive aggressive routines still elicit a wry chuckle when I reflect on them. Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson would not be my first casting choices for the film. I have also read her essay collection I Feel Bad About My Neck. Related, I really enjoyed Delia Ephron’s memoir Left on Tenth. 70-somethings finding love gives me hope.

Stephen King’s book is one of those that just makes me want to pick up a pen and get down to business.

Hi Laura, I took an interest at the work schedule that you shared because I am trying to set one for myself as well. Question: When do you eat/cook? 😅

Ha, I fit it in there, but I'm all over the place so I'm not going to try and schedule it. I don't cook much at all during the day - breakfast and lunch are simple :).

First, Yayyyyyy! Thanks for mentioning Say Nothing. I read the book a few years ago and tried to get people into it and they would not join. The book is incredible. I highly recommend it!!! If you are Irish, this is a must read. And by Irish, I also mean Irish-American. In so many ways, we are all Irish over here on this continent. LOL.

I do not understand the fascination with Mel Robbins. As a white woman, I find her to be the stereotype of white women who run their mouths like they know everything. Why am I being so harsh? Because every time I tried to listen to a guest on her show, she talked over them and they could barely get a word in. It was unbearable to continue listening to her show. She is embarrassing to me as a white woman. She is NOT the person I would go to for personal development. No. Laura on the other hand - YES! Because Laura is on the journey with you and talking to you from the side, next to you, rooting for you! Not talking down to you like Mel.

Kate Bowler, super famous podcaster/author, made a real quick joke once about high fiving yourself in the mirror was an actual book someone wrote and I have never felt so seem. I don't wish her harm, but I always found her advice not worth paying for. And now we know she likely stole it. I happily pre-ordered Cassie's book.

I received an email today that Cassie’s book Let Them has an updated (later) release date. Bumped out to 2/15. I hope it’s because it can’t keep up with sales. I would love to see HER book fly off the shelves. Thanks for writing about this Laura. It’s so unsettling.

The David Whyte 2 part episode on Tetragrammaton was precision. I seriously think I am obsessed with David. I will listen to him on anything. Maybe even MR 😂

The Pitt is terrific. I've stayed away from Landman because I was worried it was the same Taylor Sheridan story in different costumes. Maybe we'll give it a try.

Say Nothing is wonderful. This is Dolours account of her time in the IRA, and some of her accounts are disputed, but the overall story is gripping. I studied The Troubles in school, before the Good Friday accord was signed, so I knew a lot about the background of the story. My husband did not and watched it with me. He was left feeling very conflicted which is about right I think. If you don't mind not knowing who to pull for in a story, you will love it. The relationship between Dolours and her sister Mar is something...
